Albuquerque, NM- On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, the New Mexico State Police will begin proactive crime suppression and traffic enforcement operations in the Albuquerque Metro area. Approximately 35 New Mexico State Police officers are assigned to the three weeklong Albuquerque operation. Officers will direct their efforts towards criminal activity and aggressive driving in areas of concern as relayed to the Department by the Albuquerque Police Department.
New Mexico State Police officers will conduct operations along Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 in Bernalillo County. They will be visible on the highways during peak traffic hours and will take action to reduce crashes, aggressive driving, speeding, seatbelt usage, distracted driving and DWIs.
New Mexico State Police will also be working with the New Mexico Department of Corrections and Adult Probation and Parole to target violent criminals who have outstanding absconder warrants for violent crimes and are believed to be involved in ongoing criminal activity in the Albuquerque Metro area.
“Proactive crime suppression efforts can help solve crimes and often help prevent crime in the Albuquerque Metro area” said Tim Johnson, Chief of the New Mexico State Police. “Citizens have described the driving on the interstates in Albuquerque as chaotic, often leaving them feeling unsafe or frightened.” “Shootings, murder and overall violent crime feels like a daily occurrence in the metro, we hope our plan can help slow this trend.” “A vast majority of citizens very much welcomed our presence and efforts in 2019.” “We value their support and will strive to meet their expectations once again.” “Our mission is to serve and protect residents statewide.” “Every encounter is an opportunity to build relationships and learn information to help take violent criminals off the street.”
This operation emphasizes the Department’s commitment to collaborating with other agencies to address concerns of New Mexicans impacted by crime.
