New Mexico State Police
Special Investigations Unit
ENFORCING LIQUOR CONTROL
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is responsible for enforcing the Liquor Control Act in the state of New Mexico. With over 2800 liquor licenses in the state, SIU conducts training sessions for liquor licensees and alcohol servers to ensure compliance with liquor laws and regulations. SIU agents conduct a range of operations, including controlled sales to intoxicated, minor compliance, and underage enforcement, to reduce the sale of alcohol to minors and intoxicated persons. They also conduct investigations into illegal sales of alcohol, issue administrative and non-traffic citations, and conduct postings for new liquor licenses.
REDUCING ALCOHOL-RELATED ACCIDENTS
Ā SIU agents assist NMSP Uniform in investigating traffic accidents involving alcohol. They determine the source of the alcoholic beverages, issue administrative and non-traffic citations to liquor licenses and alcohol servers, and conduct source investigations. Their operations, such as Minor Compliance, Shoulder Tap, and Underage Enforcement, help reduce alcohol access to minors and minimize alcohol-related accidents. SIU also leads sales to intoxicated person operations to raise awareness about not selling alcohol to intoxicated persons, reducing DWIs and DWI-related accidents.
