Santa Teresa Man charged for shooting Sunland Park Police Officer

Sunland Park, NM – On Saturday, April 1, 2023, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate a shooting that injured a Sunland Park Police Department (SPPD) officer earlier that day. 

 Investigations Bureau agents learned that the SPPD responded to a domestic disturbance on Megan Street in Santa Teresa. Tony Gomez (33) of Santa Teresa, NM was reportedly outside the residence, shooting in an unknown direction while other residents remained inside the home. As a SPPD officer arrived on scene, Mr. Gomez shot and wounded him. The officer was able to retreat to a safe location. 

 Mr. Gomez, who was also wearing a bulletproof vest, then barricaded himself inside the residence. After a short standoff, he peacefully surrendered to authorities. He was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Adult Detention Center and charged with:

 Attempted murder

Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

Child abuse – 3 counts

Kidnapping

Shooting at a dwelling/motor vehicle – 7 counts

Criminal damage to property

Negligent use of a deadly weapon

 The SPPD officer was transported to an area hospital where he is being treated for non-life threating injuries. For further information on the identity and status of the officer, please contact the Sunland Park Police Department. 

 This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
