Roswell man charged with shooting at off-duty State Police officer’s residence.

Roswell, NM – On Monday, February 27, 2023, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate a drive-by shooting at the home of an off-duty New Mexico State Police officer.

Investigations Bureau agents learned that the officer was at home with his family when multiple gunshots struck his residence at around 9:00 p.m. Fortunately, he was able to get his family to safety.

Through the investigation, agents identified a suspect vehicle. The vehicle was located at a residence on Washington Ave in Roswell, where agents spoke with the registered owner of the vehicle, Jonah Alexander Flores (25) of Roswell, NM.

During the interview, Flores admitted to shooting at the officer’s residence. Subsequently, a search warrant was executed, and agents recovered a handgun from Flores’ residence.

Flores was booked into Chavez County Detention Center and charged with:

  • Count 1:Abuse of a child (placed in a dangerous situation)
  • Count 2:Shooting at an inhabited dwelling or occupied building
  • Count 3:Aggravated Assault with intent to commit a felony
  • Count 4:Aggravated Assault with intent to commit a felony
  • Count 5:Possession of a firearm or destructive device by a felon

“This incident is a reminder of the risks my officers face, even when they are off-duty and in the safety of their homes,” said New Mexico State Police Chief, Tim Johnson. “I am grateful that my officer and his family were unharmed, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case.”

This case is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
