Quay County, NM – On October 29, at about 10:00 a.m., New Mexico State Police officers were dispatched to U.S. Highway 54 near milepost 329 northeast of Tucumcari for a crash involving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala and a 2016 Volvo commercial motor vehicle (CMV).
The initial investigation indicated that the Impala, driven by Ervin Burton Jr., 32, of Chicago, Illinois, was parked on the north side of the U.S. 54 westbound lanes with the driver side of the vehicle partially in the lane of travel. For reasons still under investigation, the Volvo CMV rear-ended the driver’s side of the Impala, knocking it off the road.
Burton suffered injuries and was transported to an area hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The 27-year-old passenger in the Impala was also transported to the hospital for injuries. Their condition is not known.
The 42-year-old driver of the Volvo was not injured. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and seatbelts were not worn by the occupants in the Impala. This crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
