Guadalupe County, NM – On May 29, 2021, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was alerted to a deceased male who had multiple gunshot wounds and located a body on the side of U.S. Highway 84 around milepost 75 near Anton Chico, NM.
Investigators identified the victim as Oscar Perez Castaneda, 32, of Omaha, Nebraska.
During an extensive investigation, agents identified a suspect in the shooting, Luis Fernando Lopez-Duran 38, of Denver, Colorado. Agents learned of Lopez-Duran’s location in Colorado. An arrest and search warrant were issued by State Police for Lopez-Duran and his residence in Colorado.
On June 9, 2021, New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents with the assistance of the FBI Denver Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force and the Aurora Colorado Police SWAT Team tracked down Lopez-Duran and arrested him in the parking lot of a barber shop in Aurora, Colorado. Lopez-Duran was taken into custody without incident. Lopez-Duran was transported to the Aurora Police Department, and he will be extradited back to New Mexico.
