Chaves County, NM – On May 8, at about 3:15 p.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a single-vehicle crash at milepost 4 on the Roswell Relief Route.
The initial investigation indicates that a 2004 Honda Civic, driven by Carl Vansteenburg, 42, of Dandridge, TN, was traveling northwest on the Roswell Relief Route. The Honda left the roadway for unknown reasons, traveled across southbound lanes, and crashed into a concrete barrier.
Vansteenburg suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The 63-year-old passenger was transported to an area hospital for injuries. His current condition is not known.
Alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in this crash and seatbelts were not worn. This crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
