Las Vegas, NM – On January 4, 2023, at around 12:30 p.m. the New Mexico State Police was requested by the Las Vegas Police Department to investigate a fatal crash following a vehicular pursuit involving their officers.
The initial investigation indicated that around noon on January 4th, Las Vegas Police Department officers initiated a pursuit of a gold Honda Civic, driven by Gilbert Montoya, 42, of Las Vegas, NM. During the pursuit the Honda left the roadway and crashed at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Chavez Street.
Montoya, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. A thirty-three-year-old male passenger who was in the Honda was injured. He was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to Albuquerque hospital. His condition is not known.
