The New Mexico State Police offer many different career tracks and many different directions for additional specialized training and advancements. Over the course of their careers with New Mexico State Police, over half of our officers have moved around as members of various units, and many have participated in multiple special programs. No matter what your interests are, there is a path to help you realize those goals.
Full retirement starts at just 25 years of service. At that time, retirement is paid out monthly at 75% of the average of the highest earning 3 years during an officer’s career. With the minimum time of 25 years, you will receive 75% of your salary for the rest of your life.
Demystifying The Numbers
New Mexico State Police starting base salary is $23+ per hour, with overtime available at
- Sergeant $65-$75K
- Lieutenant $84-$88K
- Captain $96K+
- Major $105K +
- Deputy Chief $115K
Officers also earn a variety of benefits. They begin earning Paid Time Off from the time they become an officer. Vacation time is earned as follows:
- 0-10 years – 3 weeks a year to start
- 10-15 years – 3.5 weeks
- 15-20 years – 4.2 weeks
- 20+ years – 4.8 weeks

Officers also receive $1000 per year towards uniform and equipment upgrades. Unlike many other law enforcement organizations, weapons for NMSP officers are paid for in full.
